Expected Duties:

 

  • Record and deliver organized rounds, discuss cases and gather additional information as necessary

  • Evaluating incoming patients and prioritizing based on assessment

  • Partner with patient care team regarding treatment plans, client communication and nursing care concerns

  • Provide client education including, but not limited to: home care instructions, medications (indications, adverse reactions) and general wellness updates on hospitalized patients

  • Assist DVM with patient assessment, treatment and procedures

  • Provide monitoring and nursing care to hospitalized patients

  • Induce and monitor general anesthesia and sedation procedures

  • Perform in-house laboratory testing and prepare samples for outside laboratory testing

 

Experience:

 

  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) preferred

  • Previous Emergency experience preferred

  • Proficient in calculations (drugs, constant rate infusions, unit conversions, etc.)

  • Flexibility with work hours and able to work additional hours and on call hours

  • Basic knowledge of surgical procedures, positioning and anesthesia

  • Fluid calculations, including up to multiple CRIs

  • Perform appropriate patient restraint for examinations and procedures

  • Acquire, prepare and ship laboratory specimens (Heska in-house, Antech outside lab, other labs as requested) along with running automated CBCs, preparation of blood films to perform manual differentials and platelet counts, running various chemistries, Coag tests, and collect, evaluate and report urinalysis results.

  • General nursing care such as: transferring cases to the ICU team, accurately obtaining and assessing patient vitals (temperatures, pulses/heart rate, respirations, blood pressure, pain score, etc.), auscultation of the lungs, prepare and administer parental nutrition

  • Perform general venipuncture, peripheral/central/arterial catheter placement and maintenance

  • Perform possible emergency procedures during surgery including but not limited to resuscitation with colloids/crystalloid fluids, establish and maintenance of open airway intubation, oxygen administration via ET tube administration of pharmacological agents under veterinary supervision

  • Induction, surgical skin preparation, monitor and recovery of surgical patients for minor or major surgical procedures

  • Admitting and discharging patients, client communication and education, answering phone calls and scheduling appointments 

  • Cleaning, stocking, general organization and maintenance of ICU/Isolation equipment and supplies

  • On-call rotations 

 

Required Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Knowledge of basic veterinary practices, procedures and terminology with willingness to pursue further education equaling Certified/Licensed Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technician Specialist (ACVECCT-VTS) status. 

  • Ability to appropriately handle, lift and restrain animals (dogs, cats) and stand for long periods of time.

  • Ability to perform veterinary medical procedures (i.e. administer CPR, draw blood, administer medications and fluids, and assess and triage patients.

  • Ability to communicate well with other technicians and doctors regarding the needs of the patients

  • Have basic organizational and computer skills as well as good technician skills.

  • Preferred: Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).  One year of recent experience in veterinary practice with increasing responsibilities.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience:

·         Prepares and operates digital radiology equipment and follows radiology safety procedures.

·         Performs pre-surgical duties on animals and prepares animals for surgery.

·         Calculates, administers and records pre-anesthetic drugs.

·         Monitors anesthesia during surgery, through post-anesthesia and recovery.

·         Cleans and prepares surgical instruments and ensures supplies are ready for use.

·         Educate clients on pre and post- surgical care of their animals.

·         Performs dental cleanings.

·         Responds to emergency situations, administering triage care.

·         Assist Veterinarians with euthanasia

·         Assists veterinary and team members with other duties as assigned.

Technician candidates must be friendly, outgoing, and detail-oriented. Must have knowledge of surgery, dentistry, blood draws, catheters, and other procedures. Must be able to restrain animals, complete clinical laboratory tests, use multiple radiology techniques, as well as administer and monitor animals under anesthesia.

Qualified candidates must be reliable, motivated, positive, and able to keep up with our fast-paced environment.
